Voyagers 2021 Team MVP SS Jason Matthews Makes Major League Baseball Spring Training Debut with the Chicago White Sox
Jason Matthews called up to Major League Baseball Spring Training
Great Falls, MT. - 2021 Pioneer League International Player of the Year and Voyagers Team MVP, Jason Matthews, has officially made his debut in Major League Baseball Spring Training for the Chicago White Sox. Matthews entered the game Wednesday night as a defensive substitution in the bottom of the 7th inning replacing SS Leury Garcia. Matthews first at bat did not come until the top of the 9th inning where he flew out to center.
Coming off an impressive stint with the Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League, Matthews looks to continue his success coming into the new season. Matthews was one of the first Voyagers players to be signed by an MLB team since the Pioneer League went Independent. He is now one of 7 players to have been signed by a Major League Club. Matthews was also reunited in 2022 at High-A Winston Salem Dash with 4 former Voyagers players; Ben Norman, Hunter Dollander, Andy Atwood, and Riley Jepson.
Matthews looks to be the first New Zealand born player to make it to the SHOW. No other native New Zealander has made it past the AAA level.
The Voyagers Opening Day is Tuesday, May 23rd against the Glacier Range Riders. Season tickets and single game tickets are now on sale. Visit gfvoyagers.com or call 406-452-5311 to reserve your seats today!
