Behind White-Hot Bats in Windsor, Great Falls Outlasts Owlz in Slugfest
It was nonstop electricity in Windsor as the Voyagers stopped a three-game skid in the highest-scoring game of the PBL season so far with a 21-14 dismantling of the Owlz.
It was nonstop electricity in Windsor as the Voyagers stopped a three-game skid in the highest-scoring game of the PBL season so far with a 21-14 dismantling of the Owlz. All but one player who stepped to the plate on Sunday reached base, and a football scoreline overshadowed some stellar pitching across the rest of the league. The Owlz put 13 on the board in the first five innings and seemed in control early on. Dave Matthews, Danny Perez, Josh Glenn and Jackson Coutts all homered in that span.
True to its football scoreline, however, this outing was a tale of two halves, as it was all Great Falls starting with a pair of RBI singles in the sixth to cut it to 13-6. The offensive inferno completely shifted to the away dugout as they scored nine in the eighth and six more in the ninth, completing an improbable comeback and then some. Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that the Voyagers needed only one home run all afternoon to put up this tally. That homer belonged to Charley Hesse, who also doubled twice and drove in a team-high five runs. His three walks in addition made it a perfect day at the plate. Riley Jepson, Ryan McCarthy, and Derek Kolbush all brought home three, and the remainder of the lineup all reached base and crossed the plate at least once. Payton Harris and Montana Quigley stabilized things out of the bullpen for the Voyagers in the late frames, as the Owlz managed just one run over the last four innings.
Ogden 4, Boise 1: Arevalo Efficient in Complete Game
A back-and-forth series in the South ended in a draw, with Ogden's Pablo Arevalo starring on Sunday. The righthander took just 111 pitches to go all nine innings, giving up one run on just four hits and notching four Ks. The Raptors fell behind early through Alex Baeza's first-inning sacrifice fly, but RBI singles from Rafael Narea and Juan Teixeira as well as two runs scored off Noah McBride's wild pitches were all they needed to cap an efficient display from their starter with a win. Boise remains a half-game clear of NoCo in the South, with Ogden also in the mix.
Glacier 5, Rocky Mountain 1: Solomon Goes Six Strong, Vibes Silenced by Glacier Arms
Glacier capped off a strong week and maintained their status at the top of the North Division behind a strong pitching performance, taking the weekend series against Rocky Mountain. Tanner Solomon worked six quality innings with six hits and six strikeouts, giving up the Vibes' lone run through a Carson Maxwell solo blast in the first. Glacier also tallied their runs early, featuring homers from Eddie McCabe and Mason Dinesen, giving the Range Riders a 5-1 lead after four. The scoreline held the rest of the way thanks to solid bullpen outings on both sides. Glacier remains a game above Missoula atop the North.
Missoula 9, Billings 2: PaddleHeads Break Out Brooms Against Mustangs
The PaddleHeads finished off a week of offensive fireworks in style with an all-around dominant display. This weekend set was never a fair fight, and that proved true on Sunday as Billings managed just one hit off Zach Penrod and company. Casey Harford's RBI double provided an early spark for the Mustangs, but their 2-0 advantage would later be erased by Keaton Greenwalt's go-ahead third-inning bomb, his 15th and 16th RBIs of a fantastic week. Jakob Guenther contributed a three-run shot of his own along with a triple, and McClain O'Connor doubled twice and stole a bag in the rout. Missoula has won five of their last six games, while Billings falls to a league-worst 3-9.
Grand Junction 9, Idaho Falls 7: Washington Jr Gives Jacks Thrilling Win
The weather was once again a factor in Idaho Falls, but the early lightning delay did not take away from the excitement in Grand Junction's narrow victory. The two traded blows early through Jordan Myrow and Kevin Saenz. Joe Johnson singled in the fifth to grab a 2-1 lead for the Jacks, but that was quickly taken away by Bryce Brown's first homer of the season and red-hot CJ Dunn's RBI double. Grand Junction retook the lead in the seventh with a four-spot, and the score was 6-5 heading into the ninth. Ron Washington Jr. broke things open with a three-run blast off Brian Williams. Hunter Hudson plated two for the Chukars with a double in the bottom of the ninth, but Connor Barton was able to hang on and earn the win as Grand Junction ends the series on a positive note.
