Koerper KO’s Raptors in Season’s First Knockout Round
The first Knockout Round of the Pioneer League season went four suspenseful rounds in Ogden on Sunday. Raptor Logan Williams saw several agonizingly close balls bounce off the fence and the warning track, leaving the door open for Karl Koerper of the Chukars to get the best of him in the fourth round with his three bombs. The game itself was no less of a thrill. The hosts earned a 3-1 lead in the second thanks to Brian Dansereau's base-clearing triple. Zach May answered straight away with a grand slam as the early back and forth continued. Ogden's Reece Alexiades drove in runs with a homer and a double as part of a 4-4 day to tie the contest at six in the fifth. Idaho Falls counter-punched again with Jordan Myrow's two-run single a frame later, but the Raptor bullpen clamped down late and Sal Gozzo's clutch two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth tied the game at eight. Koerper's heroics in the Knockout Round for Idaho Falls wrapped up the series in a 3-3 draw. The Chukars moved to 8-10 on the season while the Raptors fell to 10-8, still in the thick of a battle in the congested South standings.
Rocky Mountain 12, Boise 9: Vibes Back on Track, Win Second Straight Against Hawks
The Rocky Mountain Vibes closed the weekend with some momentum after a huge series win over Boise. Jacob Barfield led the way in a back-and-forth encounter, reaching base four times and driving in three early runs for the Vibes. Six of his teammates also drove in runs as their early offense was enough to withstand a five-run seventh-inning charge by the Hawks, with Nathan Draves and Alexis Cedano closing the door in the final two frames. DJ Poteet of Boise hit the game's only home run, driving in three runs on the afternoon. The Vibes improve to 6-11 while the Hawks fall to 10-8.
Billings 5, Glacier 3: Mustangs Mash Three Homers to Top Range Riders
Billings took two of the last three in a six-game set against Glacier thanks to Sunday's narrow triumph. The long ball was the recipe today, as Mitch Moralez, Lance Logsdon and Gabe Wurtz plated all five Mustang runs with their round-trippers. Tyler Wilber was the only Mustang with multiple hits on the day, going 3-4, but three scoreless innings from Cam Tullar and efficient bullpen work late meant that was all Billings needed to seal the win. The Range Riders' effort was led by Crews Taylor's solid 4-5 day at the plate with two stolen bases to boot. Glacier moves to 11-5, with Billings improving to 5-13, still the league-worst mark.
Grand Junction 14, Northern Colorado 5: Jackalopes Dominate Again, Take Third Straight Over Owlz
A 59-run weekend for Grand Junction closed with another convincing victory on Sunday. The champs essentially led wire-to-wire, dominating the arms of Jose Diaz and Chase Jessee and never looking back. Red-hot Jaylen Hubbard smacked a home run and a double, Colin Gordon whacked a grand slam, and the entire lineup kept its form from a record-setting weekend. Jackalopes starter Justin Kleinsorge was also solid, fanning nine and allowing one run in five innings of work. Estevan De La O was a bright spot for the Owlz, falling just a double short of the cycle. Grand Junction makes it five in a row to climb to .500, and the Owlz fall to 10-7 but stay atop the South.
Missoula 7, Great Falls 3: PaddleHeads Prevail in Rain-Shortened Finale
Missoula made it five straight and a home sweep over Great Falls in a fantastic week. McClain O'Connor gave his side the lead with a two-RBI double in the third, and the PaddleHeads hung on the rest of the afternoon. Jakob Guenther was a perfect 4-4 with a solo shot and an RBI double, Mark Timmins threw four innings of one-run bullpen work, and the PaddleHeads swiped four bags in the effort. The Voyagers mustered four hits in the seven-inning affair, two coming from Matthew Richardson who slugged his first homer of the season. Missoula remains the league's best at 13-5, with Great Falls sitting at 5-11 after the result.
