Baseballs were flying out of Future Legends Field on Wednesday night, with the Owlz and Vibes combining to hit 12 home runs. The Owlz were firing away from the word "go", with Dave Matthews and Payton Robertson leading off the game with back-to-back homers and Tim Bouchard hitting a solo homer later in the frame. Back-to-back jacks by Jacob Barfield and Matt Hogan helped Rocky Mountain take a 4-3 lead in the second, but Matthews cracked a three-run homer to kickstart a seven-run rally. Jackson Coutts and Bouchard both added two-run shots to extend the lead. Coutts piled on another two-run homer in the bottom of the third, which gave the Owlz a 13-4 lead. The Vibes didn't hit any homers in the top of the fourth, but they scored nine times to even the score, featuring two run-scoring hits by Steve Barmakian, which included a game-tying two-run double. In the bottom half of the frame though, the Owlz loaded the bases before Robertson drove home a run with a walk, and Coutts drove everyone home with a grand slam, giving him three home runs and eight RBIs on the night. The Vibes didn't give in – Dusty Stroup homered in the top of the fifth, Elvis Peralta and Barmakian went deep in the top of the sixth, and Stroup drove home the tying run with a double. The scoring halted after that, and the teams headed to a Knockout Round, where Matthews finished his excellent night at the plate by hitting three home runs to down Stroup. The Owlz are now four games back of the Vibes in the second-half South Division standings.
Billings 28, Ogden 11: Raging-Hot Mustangs Tie Season-High in Runs to Win Ninth Straight
The Raptors struck first with four runs in the bottom of the first inning on Wednesday, but they were unable to keep the piping-hot Billings lineup down for very long. The Mustangs scored once in the second before dropping a 10-spot in the top of the third, setting the table for Billings to tie the 2023 season-high of 28 runs that the Jackalopes set earlier this summer. Every player in the Billings lineup recorded at least one hit, eight of the nine starters drove in a run, and everyone in the lineup scored a run. The Mustangs went deep five times - including two long balls from Gabe Wurtz, who drove in six runs. Connor Denning homered and drove in five, Taylor Lomack collected four hits including a homer, and Blake Evans went 5-for-7 with three doubles and five RBIs. Over the last two games, the Mustangs have combined for 51 runs, the most any team has scored over a two-game stretch this year. With their ninth win a row, Billings sits just two games back of Missoula in the North Division second-half standings.
Glacier 19, Idaho Falls 14: Big Nights from Howell and Miller Help Glacier Hold Off Chukars' Late Charge
The Chukars cracked the scoreboard first in the third game of their series with the Range Riders, but Glacier answered with a pair of crooked numbers. The Range Riders scored four times in the second and five in the third to build a 9-1 lead. The Chukars got back in the game with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth, but Glacier came right back with three of their own in the sixth and two more seventh to bring their lead back to eight. Idaho Falls wasn't quite ready to cave though, as they scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to claw to within 14-11. Christian Kirtley hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth, and Dean Miller capped a four-run ninth inning with a two-run homer to make the score 19-11. Miller and Gabe Howell both finished the night with five runs driven in. Idaho Falls scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late.
Grand Junction 14, Boise 11: Jacks Gain Ground in Division with Six-Run Seventh
The Jackalopes and Hawks traded blows for much of Wednesday's contest before the Jacks pulled away with a six-run rally in the seventh inning. Jaylen Hubbard gave Grand Junction the lead with his two-run homer that kickstarted the rally. Matt Wong chipped in a two-run single, and the Jacks added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth, which ended up being the difference in the game as Boise scored five in the bottom of the ninth. Hubbard and Andrew Meggs led the way for the Jacks, each driving in three runs. Grand Junction is just 1.5 games behind the Vibes for the South Division second-half lead.
Great Falls 10, Missoula 0
Missoula 9, Great Falls 2: Big Rallies, Dominant Pitching Highlight Doubleheader Split in Missoula
After Tuesday's rainout, the Voyagers and PaddleHeads squared off in a doubleheader to open their series, and the Voyagers put their stamp on the opener with a nine-run third inning. Xane Washington drove in two runs in the inning with a double and a single, and Anthony Herron Jr. smacked a three-run homer. Giovanni DiGiacomo also collected multiple hits in the inning, including an RBI double. On the mound, Kelsey Ward only struck out one batter but blanked the Missoula lineup over six innings.
Great Falls fired the opening salvo in the nightcap with an unearned run, but Missoula stormed back with a five-run bottom of the first, featuring a two-run homer from Josh Elvir and a three-run homer by Thomas DeBonville. DeBonville collected three hits on the night, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Ryan Cash and Luis Navarro each collected two hits, and Cameron Thompson reached base four times. On the mound, Alfredo Villa punctuated his fantastic month of August with a seven-inning complete game, allowing just one earned run and five hits, striking out seven. The right-hander comfortably leads the league in all three Triple Crown categories. Missoula still holds a two-game lead over Billings in the North Division second-half standings.
