Vibes Attack Early, Hold Off Jackalopes to Reduce Magic Number to 2
The series now shifts back to Colorado Springs, where the Vibes need just one win to lock up the South Division second-half title.
In the third game of their pivotal series against Grand Junction, the Vibes were the first to strike once again. Dusty Stroup homered in the top of the second, and Elvis Peralta brought home a run later in the frame with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, Rocky Mountain exploded for six runs, including a two-run double by Jacob Barfield and a two-run homer from Stephen Wilmer. After Ron Washington Jr. hit a solo homer for the Jackalopes, Ethan Lopez responded with a solo homer of his own, giving the Vibes a 9-2 lead. The Jackalopes chipped away, cutting the lead to four after Joe Johnson's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, though the Vibes got a run back in the eighth on an RBI single by Barfield. The Jackalopes got within striking distance in the bottom of the eighth – Matt Wong hit an RBI double, and Johnson drilled his second homer of the night, a two-run shot to cut the deficit to just three. The Jacks then got the tying run to the plate in the frame, but Jackson Cunningham struck out Jacob Cruce to squash the threat. The Vibes got an insurance run in the top of the ninth and set the Jacks down in order in the bottom of the inning to secure an 11-7 win. The series now shifts back to Colorado Springs, where the Vibes need just one win to lock up the South Division second-half title.
Great Falls 9, Billings 7: Pair of Grand Slams Snaps Mustangs' Winning Streak, Comeback Attempt Falls Short
The Mustangs jumped out to a lead in the third inning on a Taylor Lomack RBI single, but Great Falls answered with a monstrous frame. The Voyagers got the first three men on in the fourth, then Jaylyn Williams cracked a grand slam to give Great Falls the lead. The Voyagers added another run on Jaylen Armstrong's RBI double before loading the bases again, and this time Xane Washington belted a grand slam, the second of the inning, extending the lead to 9-1. The Mustangs slowly clawed back into the game, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth, once in the fifth, and twice more in the sixth. Gabe Wurtz's RBI single in the eighth trimmed the deficit to just two, and Billings loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, putting the tying and winning runs on base. However, Andrew Garcia struck Lomack out to end the game and snap Billings' 15-game winning streak. Despite the loss, the Mustangs maintained their half-game lead in the North Division second-half standings.
Boise 10, Missoula 7: Hawks Get to PaddleHeads Early, Contain Late Charge
Boise jumped all over the Missoula pitching staff, scoring three runs in the first, second, and fourth innings to build a sizable advantage. Alex Baeza drove in four of those runs with an RBI single in the first and a three-run homer in the second. Anthony Walters drove in two with an RBI double in the first and a grounder in the fourth, and Noah Marcelo contributed three RBIs on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double. Derek Maiben scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to extend their lead to double digits, but Missoula began to creep back into the game in the sixth. Dondrei Hubbard broke up the shutout with a solo homer, and Luis Navarro doubled home a run later in the frame. Boise still led 10-3 after eight innings, but two-run homers by Navarro and McClain O'Connor put Missoula within shouting distance with one out in the ninth. Drew Marrufo settled down and recorded the final two outs of the game, keeping Missoula out of first place for another day.
Idaho Falls 9, Glacier 6: Chukars Ride Eight-Run First to Road Sweep
The Chukars wasted no time asserting themselves in their series finale at Glacier Bank Park, with the first five batters reaching and two runs scoring before an out was made in the first inning. Stephen Cullen then brought home two more runs with a single, and Anthony Frechette singled to load the bases again. Brandon Bohning drove everyone home with a grand slam, putting a cap on a massive eight-run first. Chris Monroe added an RBI double in the second, and Dylan Gotto was strong on the mound, allowing just two runs (none earned) and three hits over six innings. Glacier mounted a bit of a comeback in the eighth inning, scoring four runs on a Dean Miller RBI single and Matt Clayton's three-run homer. However, Brian Williams set the Range Riders down in order in the ninth to secure a series sweep. The Range Riders enter their final series of the year on the outside looking in on the playoff race.
Ogden 5, Northern Colorado 3: Raptors Recover From Early Deficit, Take Series
The Owlz struck first in their series finale in Ogden, with Henry George leading off the game with a triple and Kevin Jimenez bringing him across with a single. Dave Matthews led off the fourth inning with a solo homer, and Nick Michaels tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly. The Raptors cut into the deficit with a run in the fourth and sixth before Josh Broughton gave Ogden the lead with a two-run double in the seventh. Nick Ultsch added an RBI double in the eighth, and Foster Pace, Marshall Shill, Quinn Waterhouse, and Brandon McCabe comibined to allow just two hits over four shutout innings of relief.
