Exciting 85th Opening Day across the Pioneer League
Thrilling, competitive games highlight Opening Day's action.
The Pioneer League's 85th 2024 Opening Day featured thrilling games that were highly competitive. The drama featured a number of firsts in Pioneer League history: the Oakland Ballers and Yolo High Wheelers played their first game, the "Strike Zone Challenge" rule was used to overturn a call for the first time, and the "Knockout Round" decided two games for the first time on an Opening Day.
In a high-scoring affair, the Northern Colorado Owlz outlasted the Ogden Raptors, winning 14-9. The Owlz's offense was powered by Henry George and Jackson Coutts, who combined for seven hits and six RBIs. Despite a strong middle innings rally where the Raptors scored four runs, they couldn't contain the Owlz's lineup. The game was marked by frequent lead changes and intense offensive rallies, making it a thrilling contest for the 2,814 fans in attendance.
In a pitcher's duel in Idaho Falls, the Chukars' Owen Sharts and Alfredo Villa of the Missoula PaddleHeads each posted quality starts. Idaho Falls took a 6-3 lead into the 9th inning, but Kamron Willman launched a 3-run HR into the night to send the game to the "Knockout Round". Ultimately, the Chukars prevailed with a walk-off Knockout Round blast from Trevor Rogers.
With a huge night at the plate from rightfielder Austin Davis, the Oakland Ballers joined the Pioneer Baseball League with a 7-6 over the Glacier Range Riders in Flathead Valley, Montana. Davis went 5 for 6 with 4 RBI and teammate Dondrei Hubbard went deep for the Ballers. Despite home runs from Andy Atwood, Christian Kirtley, Ben Fitzgerald, and Drew Sims, the Range Riders fell short at home.
The Billings Mustangs jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and managed to hold on to win 8-6 as the Great Falls Voyagers mounted a late surge. Mustangs' starter Luke Trueman pitched a brilliant game, going five innings and striking out seven Voyagers. Trevor Jackson locked down the 9th to get the save with three strikeouts.
An evenly played game between the Grand Junction Jackalopes and Boise Hawks saw both teams finish the 9th inning with 5 runs on 7 hits. While the heart of the order carried the Jackalopes, going a combined 6 for 13 with 4 RBI, Micah Yonamine was the star of the game with a homer in the 3rd and a walk-off dinger in the Knockout Round to send the Boise Hawks fans home happy.
The Yolo High Wheelers hosted the Rocky Mountain Vibes for their first home game in club history. After 5 innings with the High Wheelers leading 4-3, the game was suspended and will be finished at a later date.
