A look back at the week that was
Northern Colorado Owlz at Ogden Raptors
The Northern Colorado Owlz got off to a scorching start in 2024, reeling off 5 straight wins. The Ogden Raptors managed to prevent the sweep with a 16-6 win in the series finale. Owlz CF Dave Matthews led the Northern Colorado offense that scored 80 runs over the six games, and Owlz starter Chase Jessee logged his first win of the season with 11 strikeouts in a 20-1 win on May 24. Northern Colorado heads home to host the Idaho Falls Chukars in Week 2, while Ogden will stay home and play the Missoula PaddleHeads.
Billings Mustangs at Great Falls Voyagers
In a closely contested series, the Billings Mustangs emerged with wins in four of the six games in Great Falls. Mustangs leadoff Taylor Lomack was the key catalyst for the Billings offense, recording ten hits and stealing eight bases, while starter Ethan McRae excelled in seven strong innings to pick up a win. Billings will return home to compete against the Boise Hawks, and the Great Falls Voyagers will battle the Glacier Range Riders at home in Week 2.
Grand Junction Jackalopes at Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks defended their turf against the Grand Junction Jackalopes, logging wins in five of the six games. The Hawks' pitching held the Jackalopes to an average of under four runs per game, led by Opening Day starter Brayden Spears who set the tone with five strong innings. Hawks slugger Micah Yonamine had hits and scored runs in every game, reaching base 12 times in the series. Boise will head to Billings and Grand Junction will head to Yolo in Week 2.
Missoula PaddleHeads at Idaho Falls Chukars
In an offensive battle in which the teams averaged over 26 runs per game, the Missoula PaddleHeads left Idaho Falls with four wins. Infielder Kamron Willman had a few big games for the PaddleHeads, with ten hits and 12 RBI in the five games he played. Missoula starter Connor Schultz dominated in seven innings, punching out eight and limiting the Chukars to two runs. Missoula will travel south to Ogden, and Idaho Falls will travel to Northern Colorado in Week 2.
Oakland Ballers at Glacier Range Riders
After dropping the first two to Oakland, the Glacier Range Riders stormed back to win the series with four straight wins. Glacier starter Jonathan Pintaro has been the talk of the league, striking out ten over seven shutout innings. The Range Riders rightfielder Nick Block reached base 12 times and was a key part of the series turnaround for Glacier, who heads to Great Falls. Oakland will enter the state of Colorado for the first time, facing Rocky Mountain in Week 2.
Rocky Mountain Vibes at Yolo High Wheelers
In the Pioneer League's first series in California, the Rocky Mountain Vibes took two of three from the Yolo High Wheelers. Rocky Mountain 2B Josh Day had multiple hits in each game to lead the Vibes offense, while the Vibes starter Daniel Nunan held down the fort for the win in the third game to take the series. Yolo will host Grand Junction as Rocky Mountain will welcome Oakland to its home opener.
