Daily Roundup: Game Recaps of June 6, 2024
Whitmore makes history and Oakland wins Knockout Round
Grand Junction Jackalopes 16, Northern Colorado Owlz 14
Grand Junction took its first game of the series and won for the first time at home all season with a comeback win that included seven runs in the sixth, before giving up six runs to the Owlz in the ninth but still holding on to a 16-14 victory. Damian Henderson led the way for the Lopes, coming up just a double shy from the cycle en route to driving in six runs and scoring three. Dairo Gomez was Northern Colorado's hero, as he drove in all four of his runs via a grand slam in the Owlz's six-run fourth inning. Hunter Bryan closed out the ninth to earn the save for the Jackalopes.
Billings Mustangs 14, Rocky Mountain Vibes 6
Billings extended its winning streak with an impressive offensive performance in which they reached base 27 times, while Rocky Mountain bounced back from its one-hitter on Wednesday to score six runs, all of which came in the fifth inning. The Vibes found their RBI leader in rookie Steven Rivas, who drove in two runs with a triple, while starter Daniel Nunan got roughed up to the tune of six earned runs on eight hits and five walks. Jason Rooks drove in five runs on four hits for the Mustangs, including a bases-clearing triple in the top of the sixth to secure the victory.
Boise Hawks 20, Idaho Falls Chukars 6
The Hawks got off to a hot start, hanging eight runs in the first two innings and scoring in each of the first six innings. Boise's Robert Dudzinski went six strong innings, allowing only four hits and three earned runs while striking out eight to grab his second win of the season. Catcher Benjamin Livorsi led the way on offense for the Hawks, driving in six runs on three hits — including a three-run home run — while Trevor Rogers drove in half of the Chukars's runs with a three-run bomb of his own in the ninth.
Ogden Raptors 11, Glacier Range Riders 1
In Flathead Valley, Ogden's pitchers were the story of the day, led by starter Matthew Hess who went six innings and earned his first win of the year. The Raptors racked up the score piece-by-piece across the entirety of the game with the duo of Landen Barns and Raymond Gil driving in nine of the team's 11 runs among the two of them. Both launched long balls in the fourth inning, with Gil driving in three with a single swing as Barns followed it a few batters later with a two-run bomb of his own to lock in the win.
Missoula Paddleheads 7, Great Falls Voyagers 4
After giving Great Falls its first lead of the game with a four-run third inning, Missoula shut down the Voyagers for six innings to achieve a comeback victory. Mahki Backstrom proved to be the real difference maker for the visiting team as he launched a three-run home run in the third to take the lead for the Voyagers. Missoula's Alec Sanchez hit its only home run of the game in the bottom of the third to get the Paddleheads back within a run while third baseman Collin Runge broke the tie once and for all with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Both starters, Missoula's Nate Madej and Alfredo Villa of the Voyagers, went at least five innings and allowed four earned runs or less, while Jestin Jones secured the Missoula win with three shutout innings and five strikeouts.
Oakland Ballers 9, Yolo High Wheelers 8 (Knockout Round)
After nine innings proved not to be enough to settle the third game of the intrastate matchup, Oakland's Dondrei Hubbard took things into his own hands and hit his second and third home runs of the night in a late-night knockout round to secure the victory. The Ballers' Kelsie Whitmore made history as the first woman to start a game in Pioneer League history with her appearance as an opener in Thursday's game when she went three innings and allowed two earned runs. Ending with a combined five home runs in regulation, the California showdown was a slugfest, as Oakland came back to tie things in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run shot by second baseman Dan Covino. They'd stay knotted from there, as Yolo's Justin Kirby stepped to the plate first in the Knockout Round — where he hit one home run and recorded five outs — prior to power slugger Hubbard stepping to the plate and hitting two home runs and recording no outs to win the game.
