Final Stretch: The 2024 Pioneer Baseball League Playoff Race Heats Up
With Two Teams Already Clinched, the Battle for the Remaining Playoff Spots Intensifies as the Season Nears Its Thrilling Conclusion
The 2024 Pioneer League playoff push is coming down to the wire. Already in are the Missoula PaddleHeads and Glacier Range Riders, having finished first and second in the season's first half.
With two open playoff spots, the Oakland Ballers and Yolo High Wheelers are in the driver's seat, leading the second half. They square off against each other for their final five games.
Putting pressure on the Ballers and High Wheelers are the Boise Hawks, who are four back of the Ballers and High Wheelers with five to play, though Yolo holds the tiebreaker against Boise. Northern Colorado is also not mathematically eliminated, but they'll need help from Missoula and/or the tiebreakers to reach the playoffs.
Tiebreakers
Should the second half result in a tie for a playoff spot, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head matchups in the second half. If teams are still tied, the playoff spot will be determined by runs allowed. Run differential will then be used to break remaining ties. If teams are still even after that, individual game results will be used, tracking backwards from the final game of the season.
If Missoula finishes in second place in the second half, the same tiebreakers will apply, but the full season will be used to determine the Wild Card team.
Oakland Ballers
Tied atop the standings in the second half, the Ballers control their own destiny. Three wins will ensure they'll finish in first and one win will guarantee at least a share of second.
Yolo High Wheelers
Also in control, the High Wheelers need to win one game to clinch a playoff spot. If they win three, they'll clinch first place in the second half and the two seed in the first round.
Boise Hawks
With 24 wins in the second half, Boise has some work to do to catch the California teams. Because Yolo holds the head-to-head, they'll need to win at least four of their final five games at Great Falls and get some help from Oakland, Yolo, and Missoula.
Northern Colorado Owlz
Northern Colorado hosts the Rocky Mountain Vibes for their final six games, and they'll need help from Oakland, Yolo, Missoula, and Boise. The Owlz are currently eliminated from a top two finish in the second half, but they're only a game-and-a-half back of Yolo in the full season standings.
Missoula PaddleHeads and the Wild Card Scenario
An intriguing nuance to the tiebreaker scenarios comes in the form of Missoula's first place finish in the first half and shot at finishing in second place in the second half. After going 37-17 in the first half, Missoula has locked up the one seed in the first round of the playoffs. Sitting with 23 wins in the second half, they'll need to win all five remaining games at home vs. Billingsto potentially trigger the tiebreakers.
If the PaddleHeads do wind up securing the second-place spot in the second half, the Wild Card would then go to the team not already in the playoffs who has the best full season record. Oakland, Yolo, Northern Colorado, and Boise are all possibilities for securing the Wild Card spot.
