Final Stretch: The 2024 Pioneer Baseball League Playoff Race Heats Up
With Two Teams Already Clinched, the Battle for the Remaining Playoff Spots Intensifies as the Season Nears Its Thrilling Conclusion
As the 2024 Pioneer Baseball League season draws to a close, the playoff picture is becoming clearer, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling postseason. With teams battling for the top spots in their respective divisions, the intensity has never been higher, and the race for the championship is wide open.
Under the Pioneer League's unique format, the playoffs will consist of the teams with the top two records in the first-half of the season and the second-half. Seeding for the playoffs is based off overall record and tie breaks are additionally decided on by overall record (head-to-head record if a tie still remains).
Already In
Having secured the top two spots in the first half of the season, the Missoula PaddleHeads and Glacier Range Riders have already clinched their bid to the postseason.
The PaddleHeads led the first half standings with an outstanding record of 37-11, eight games ahead of the second-place Glacier Range Riders. The PaddleHeads feature two of the leagues' top players in outfielder Adam Fogel and starting pitcher Alfredo Villa. Fogel, who currently leads the league in home runs, RBI and is second in batting average (behind teammate Mike Rosario), set the Pioneer League home run record on August 22nd when he hit his 33rd home run of the season.
The Range Riders finished the first half with a record of 29-19, a half game in front of the Northern Colorado Owlz. However, they've struggled in the second half of the season, with a record of 15-24 since passing the halfway mark.
Up For Grabs
With nine games left to play in the regular season no team has yet clinched a playoff bid for the second half, as several still have a chance to make the postseason.
One of the leagues' newest teams, the Oakland Ballers, currently sit atop the second-half standings with a record of 26-13. Their California counterpart, the Yolo High Wheelers, have made a huge resurgence in the second half to get into second place currently, with a record of 24-15.
The Boise Hawks remain lurking in the shadows. After finishing the first half in the middle of the pack with a record of 25-23, they now sit just one game back of the Yolo High Wheelers in the second half. Additionally, the Rocky Mountain Vibes still have a glimmer of hope as they sit four games behind the High Wheelers.
