Hernandez and Nigh Earn Opportunities with MLB Organizations
Pioneer League standouts Julien Hernandez and Brandon Nigh parlay impressive starts with Long Beach and Boise into signings with the Diamondbacks and Astros.
As an official MLB Partner League, the Pioneer Baseball League provides young players with a professional platform to continue developing, showcase their abilities and pursue opportunities with Major League organizations. That pathway has once again produced results, with Long Beach Coast pitcher Julien Hernandez recently signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Boise Hawks infielder Brandon Nigh joining the Houston Astros.
Hernandez delivered an outstanding season out of the Long Beach bullpen, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA and a remarkable 0.70 WHIP across 13 relief appearances. The right-hander worked 18.2 innings without making a start, allowing only seven hits and six walks while holding opposing hitters to a .115 batting average.
The defining feature of Hernandez's season was his ability to miss bats. He struck out 28 hitters, an average of 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings, while surrendering only six earned runs and one home run. Hernandez recorded multiple strikeouts in nine of his 13 appearances, and his combination of run prevention, limited traffic and swing-and-miss production earned him the opportunity to continue his career in the Diamondbacks organization.
Nigh was one of the Pioneer League's most productive hitters during his time with Boise, batting .342 with a .495 on-base percentage and .620 slugging percentage across 24 games. The right-handed infielder collected 27 hits in 79 at-bats, including five doubles, one triple and five home runs, while driving in 34 runs and scoring 25. His overall production resulted in an impressive 1.115 OPS over 110 plate appearances.
Nigh combined his power and run production with exceptional control of the strike zone, drawing 23 walks and being hit by four pitches while striking out only 20 times. He also stole four bases and recorded four-RBI performances against Ogden, Modesto, Missoula and Billings. His ability to reach base, produce extra-base damage and drive in runs consistently helped him earn his opportunity with the Astros organization.
The Pioneer Baseball League congratulates Hernandez and Nigh on earning the next opportunities in their professional journeys. Their performances with Long Beach and Boise demonstrated the talent, persistence and preparation required to advance, and the league wishes both players continued success as they begin their careers with the Diamondbacks and Astros organizations.
Players hoping to follow a similar path can showcase their abilities at the PBL Tryout Camp on July 17 and 18 at Bryant Field in Marysville, California. The camp will feature professional-style workouts and live-game opportunities in front of representatives from all 12 Pioneer League clubs, giving participants a direct chance to be evaluated by league decision-makers. With each club expected to select at least one player from the camp, attending could provide the opportunity needed to begin a professional career and work toward an eventual MLB organization signing.
